Soccer is my favorite sport.  It is a sport that is usually played outdoors.  It is played with two teams, each with 11 players and 7 substitutes, on the field.  The game consists of trying to put the ball in the goal using only your feet.  The team who scores the most goals wins the game.  It is a very entertaining sport and it is played worldwide.

It is the sport that I miss the most from my home country because in my current hometown it is not played as much and it is difficult to find a place where it is played here.  Sometimes I try to play with my children or friends but it does not have the same feeling as when I used play on the field or for a championship.

I enjoy watching soccer on the Internet or live when I have the opportunity.  The adrenaline is different than when you play but I like to watch it, especially when someone I know is playing.

Kitty cake – Discovering my passion in Canada

I came from Ukraine. It was my dream from childhood to live abroad, like in the USA, Canada or Europe. All people around told me that it was a crazy idea, but I believed that everything is possible. I just felt that I could realize my potential only when I will choose what to do and how. It was impossible to start something that I love there. Because my family was paying for my tuition, so they didn’t have extra money. All the time I was worried of how to survive, save enough money for studying, how to save my stipend and be the best so that my parents could be proud of me. Obviously, in that environment it was hard to be initiative, creative and try something new for myself.

I made a decision and now I’m here. As soon as I came to Canada, I started working in a kitchen within a hotel. It involved hard work, rush, stress, even moving heavy staff. Hectic, chaotic, frantic days! That was not what I dreamt of. So, I looked for my passion, my cup of tea. Finally, I made up my mind – home baking!

In fact, I have always liked baking, but have never had enough time for pursuing this dream or taking it seriously. The compliments and encouragement of my friends, family, neighbors for whom I baked dessert as a present made me take this decision. My husband helped me come up with a name for my own brand - “Kitty cake”, and I liked it. Now I’m getting ready for Wild West Daze Annual home and Leisure show in Leader to present my passion to people. And I have my favorite recipes, of course. One of them is a chocolate biscuit cake with chocolate cream. Here is my recipe:
Chocolate biscuit (sponge) cake

  • 5 large eggs
  • 150 g icing sugar
  • 80 g all-purpose flour
  • 50 g cacao
  • 30 g corn starch
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • pinch of salt

Separate egg whites from yolks. First, beat egg whites with salt for about 10 minutes until it is fluffy. Continue mixing while adding sugar, then egg yolks, and finally, the rest of the ingredients: floor, cacao, corn starch, baking powder. Put the mixture in a round pan and cover it with foil. Bake it in the oven for 25 minutes at 180C, then lower the heat to 150C and bake it for other 15 minutes. Done!

Chocolate cream (so easy and tasty):
Just take whipping cream and chocolate as much as you need. Melt the chocolate in a microwave at first, then add whipping cream and put to the fridge to cool. Then beat it with a mixer.

Decorate your cake with the chocolate cream as you like.
As you can see in the picture, I cut the cake into layers and put whipping cream and jelly inside.

That’s all. So easy and so tasty!

Canada's Winter Wonderland: Banff

Last winter, I visited Banff for my winter vacation. It was not a first visit. Eighteen years ago, Canada was the first country I travelled to overseas and I had fond memories of Banff. I still remember the masterpiece that was the Rocky Mountains. I wanted to feel the magic of the Rocky Mountains again especially, this time, the Rocky Mountains in winter.

I made a short-trip plan of 3 days and 4 nights with my wife. We researched local events and special attractions for winter time. As a result, we found some interesting things we could do in Banff.

First, we went skating on Lake Louise. Every year, Lake Louise becomes a natural ice rink. I strongly believe that there is nothing more magical than gliding across the ice with the magnificent backdrop of the Victoria Glacier. Also, a large ice castle is built and remains throughout the winter. You can take wonderful pictures with the ice castle and Lake Louise.

Next, we went on the Banff Gondola which goes up to the top of Sulphur Mountain. On the top of the mountain I experienced breathtaking views of six stunning Canadian Rocky Mountains. Also, there are hiking roads along Sulphur Mountain. I guarantee that it is the most beautiful hiking road in the world. I also strongly recommend, when visiting the Banff Gondola, booking a mountaintop table. You can enjoy a meal with a birds eye view of the Rocky Mountains. It’s worth every penny.

Finally, we come to the end of my winter Banff experience: the end of our trip. We visited the Banff Upper Hot Springs. It was an outdoor hot spring where we enjoyed wonderful views of the Rocky Mountains in a relaxing spa. In the winter time, you can experience your hair being frozen but your body being really warm!

My Weekend in Toronto

I had a short trip to Toronto at the end of May this year. At first, I visited Niagara Falls and the next two days I spent in Toronto. Niagara is a small town with a very large number of tourists from all over world. We met Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Russian, Ukrainian, German, Italian and Mexican people. The Canadian part of the Falls is in the form of a horseshoe. This is so beautiful and at the same time massive. When you stand near you can feel the power of the flow and water speed. If you visit Niagara Falls you should visit the Skylon Tower and try delicious dishes in the tower’s restaurant with a great view of the Falls and town. The floor of this restaurant rotates around its axis by 360 degrees during one hour. Also, every Saturday at 10:00 pm you will see fireworks and at night and the Falls have different colors.

The next day we bought a tour with five of the most popular tourist places of Toronto. The first one was the CN tower. For me it wasn’t so interesting because there is lattice with small holes and it prevented us to easily admire the city from the height.  Immediately next door of the CN Tower is the Ripley’s Aquarium where you can feel yourself like a child. There are a lot of fish, stingrays, sharks, turtles and jellyfishes that float above your head. This is amazing!

After the Aquarium we visited the Royal Ontario Museum where we saw rare historical exhibits from around the world, stuffed animals, minerals, precious stones, meteorites, but most of all I liked the dinosaur's skeletons.

The last day we spent at the Toronto Zoo. This is a huge area of land with six zones such as Indomalaya, African Savanna, Canadian Domain, Americas, Tundra Trek and Eurasia Wilds. We saw how a rhinoceros had dinner from human’s hands and near was her baby.  We watched as otters were happy that they were looked at by people and dove under water like synchronized swimming stars and as a shy and plump wombat could not find a secluded place. The fifth place where we didn’t have time to visit was Casa Loma, but we will be sure to do it next time.

At the end I want to say that you should discover Canada from all sides by traveling. This country is so different and only when you will look in her every corner, then you will know what she really is.

Ramadan  is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar which is a lunar calendar based on the  cycles of the moon. This is a peaceful month that abstains Muslims to do any kind of mistake. Ramadan is a pleasures and pray to become closer to God. It's also a time for families to gather and celebrate. Ramadan is very personal and individual and is a time for sacrifice. This is a month when Muslims from all over the world come together. Fasting during Ramadan is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam. These pillars or duties explain how Muslims practice their religion. According to Islam the pillars of Islam are:

  1. Shahada: faith in the Islam
  2. Salat: pray five times per day facing the direction of Mecca
  3. Zakat: give support to the needy
  4. Sawm: fast during Ramadan and
  5. Hajj: make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during one's lifetime

During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is not only about abstaining from food and drink. Muslims must also refrain from smoking, taking oral medications and engaging in sexual activities, as well as gossiping, fighting and lying.  It sounds difficult to abstain from eating for up to 17 to 18 hours. But after a couple of days it becomes normal. It is a reminder that a person is not just a physical body but a soul as well. Some people are free from fasting.  These are people who are ill or frail, women who are pregnant, breast feeding or menstruating and travelers. If someone who cannot fast traditionally they must feed one poor person for each day missed. Fasting during Ramadan is a time for Muslims to commit themselves to God. Helping  the poor, assisting the needy and sharing whatever one has with others. To get enough concentration for Ramadan we should follow some steps:

  1. Create a Ramadan count down
  2. Seek knowledge about Ramadan
  3. Make a Ramadan plan
  4. Know your life
  5. Prepare spiritually
  6. Prepare your mind
  7. Say 'good riddance ' to bad habits
  8. Plan your life around your worship

Ramadan is a beautiful month for a Muslim. I believe that if we follow those steps we can have a peaceful life and  not only for the month of Ramadan,  but also for our whole daily lives.

Frightening Experience on the Road

I will always remember the scared feelings when the car broke suddenly on the road. It happened on June 1st, a Friday evening.

I was driving to Costco after work and after I bought groceries and refueled I started to step on the gas, I heard a loud crunching noise and it felt like something was braking my car. What happened? I released my foot from the pedal, the noise disappeared but the car moved slowly. I tried to press on the pedal again, the click arose again. At that time, I was on the road near a traffic light so that I could not stop and I had to drive my car slowly. During this, I turned on the emergency lights and turned left slowly. The car behind me was anxious and blow the horn. I was very anxious and nervous because it was a heavy traffic time. I planned to turn left and then pull over. But I found the car did not give way for me. I had to try to change into the right lane slowly. Finally, I stopped on the right side of the road. It felt like one year had passed!

It was my first time that something was wrong with my car in Canada. What should I do with my poor English on the road? I was so nervous and scared. I recalled my friend who was a mechanic and then called him in Chinese to ask for help. I told him the ABS alert light was on, he told me to check if there was something blocking the wheels and comforted me with the news that the ABS system was a separate system than the power system; therefore, if the wheels were not be locked, I just tried to drive, or drove to the nearest Kaltire to fix it. I got off to check and then I knew why the car behind mine did not give way for me----my rear right turning light was not lit. I remember the frequency of the right turning signal had become faster the night before. l dialed my friend again, he explained it would happen if the turning signal light was broken. Misfortunes never come singularly!

It was 6:30 pm, Kaltire was closed. I decided to attempt to drive slowly. I started to drive when the traffic light behind me turned red. I slowly pushed the gas, after a few clicks, the car went smoothly. I chose all left turns to go home to avoid using the broken right turning signal.

Wow, I returned home successfully! I heaved a great sigh of relief. It seemed that it was necessary for me to learn more about the basic mechanical knowledge about a car and to buy vehicle rescue insurance.

When you come to Canada, the first important thing to do is to get your driver's license. Because Canada is so big, if you have no car to drive, it is like having no freedom.

I have had a driver's license for more than ten years in my home country, but I still need to learn how to drive in Canada. There are different rules between the two countries. For example, we have no "stop" sign in China. So, I tried to find a coach to instruct me on which behaviour is right or wrong when driving. I went to SGI and found a coach who gave me some very useful information about how to drive in Canada.

I remember when I first came to Saskatchewan in January. Snow lay thick on the ground. One morning I wanted to drive to work. After two days of snowing, the snow was almost up to my knees. It was so difficult to drive. I moved the snow with a shovel so I could move my car out of the drive. At that moment, one of my neighbours came out to help me. It was still snowing and windy and the temperature outside was around minus 30 degrees. At that moment, I realized how kind Canadians are. His kind actions moved me!

Spring cleaning

Our whole life is the road on which we are speedily running. After reaching a certain point, it is worthwhile to stop and look back to draw certain conclusions and sort the information that was received for a long time, taking into account our mistakes and experiences that come out of it. I want to do a spring cleaning in my mind and put everything in order. Perhaps, someone might find this information useful.

  1. Health - watch a healthy diet and maybe you need to visit a dietician doctor to compose a diet. This will be 70% success for your beautiful figure and health. Sign up for training in the gym with a personal trainer as this will make 30% of success for your figure and health.
  2. Beauty - find 1 hour a week that you could soak in the bathroom with sea salt and also make masks for the skin and hair. Take care of the nails, hand skin and pay special attention to the neck and décolleté area.
  3. Self education - sometimes even being quite an adult, we are still not sure that we are doing what we love. Try to listen to yourself and your soul which will tell you what you really want to do. Make a plan on how to achieve this goal.  Follow it slowly but confidently without fearing. Read one book a month that will help keep the brain toned.
  4. Soul - find 5 minutes a day to make 8 deep breaths; exhale bad energy and breathe in all the good and positive. Every time you wash your face, imagine that you have washed off all diseases, resentments, envy and anger.  Water is very good to clean energy. Praise yourself for any achievement and forgive all mistakes. Enjoy the surrounding nature, and notice the beauty around you.
  5. Fashion - if someone tells you not to spend so much on clothes, do not listen to anyone. Spend it necessarily, but thoughtfully. Before you buy something, count to three and feel what your soul tells you. If the answer is positive, take it. Before trying on something, emphasize all the advantages and hide the shortcoming. Think about how it can be combined with the rest of the clothes in your closet and what images you can create. Before you go shopping, check out the fashion sites and learn information about the new products of the season, because even in the mass market, you can find a good replacement for expensive designed items if you approach the matter carefully.
  6. Family - do not forget to praise your children for their achievements. Talk more often with them, because their future self-esteem depends on your praise. Also praise your husband if he has done something good for you. And do not forget to say if something does not suit you; do not ignore the insults. If the relationship with parents is not very good, try to establish them, and forgive them, so this can be a guarantee of your happiness.
  7. Society and friends- be sincere and kind with others, and help who needs it, but not to your detriment. Remember, you must love yourself as your own child.
  8. Effective time management - draw up a plan that should be done in a day and follow the points. Do not think about everything at once; for our brain it is too hard to do one thing per minute. Avoid unnecessary stress and watch for the purity of your thoughts. A positive attitude will help to be as effective as possible during the day. While waking up in the morning, say that you are a strong, successful, energetic person who can handle anything. For you, there are no problems, but only tasks with which you can easily cope with.
  9. Analysis and planning – at the end of the day, think about what good things you did for yourself, and never compare yourself with other people, but only with yourself before. Draw a clear image inside yourself of how you want to see it, and imagine how you would see your life. Think about everything to the smallest detail and return to this image as often as possible.

Say to yourself:” I’m healthy, beautiful, loved, rich and successful.”

Our universe is a huge mirror and if you show it to yourself like this, the universe will give you every opportunity to make it all come true.

Kiev has many churches and buildings that are historical. Kiev has lots of parks and gardens. I love my city and it is especially beautiful at summertime. I would recommend people to visit Kiev if they want to take a good vacation.

My Life as a Parent

In our life people choose if they want to become a parent, to have a partner or to be single for the rest of their lives. Being a parent is the most challenging and important job in the world. After we were married, my husband and I were excited to start our own family. When I was pregnant, I always took good care of myself by taking vitamins, eating lots of healthy fruits and vegetables and followed the doctor’s advice to make sure that my baby would be healthy. And also, we were searching and thinking for a unique name whether it was a boy or a girl because we had a common last name in our country. So, we decided to combine our first names.

First, we had our baby girl.  From the first day I saw and hugged her I told myself that I’ll be a good mother. Having a baby is a challenge.  For the first and second week, there’s a lot of adjustments. My daughter was awake in the evening and slept in the daytime. Sometimes, I didn’t know that I had already fallen asleep and when she cried, I panicked. There was a time that I needed to ask my mother to take charge because I was dizzy. It’s true that having a baby is not easy.
Then, when my daughter turned one I always fixed her hair, put a ribbon or headband on it even though, she had thin hair. I bought pink dresses, pink shoes, anything all pink. Of course! Most moms’ want pink for their baby girl. She was a happy and talented girl. We enjoyed watching her. After four years, I had another baby girl. My husband and I were so happy and my eldest daughter, too. When she saw her baby sister, she hugged and kissed her. We were so happy to have two daughters. When we went to work, my mom was the one who took care of my daughters. There was an adjustment, but not the same as my first daughter. There are times that my eldest daughter wanted to go to her dad’s work. She cried. That’s why I told my husband that he should put her in his pocket. The funny thing was, when they had a basketball uniform, he put my daughter’s name on the back of his shorts.

Afterwards, when my second daughter was eight months, my husband needed to come here to Canada. I knew that would be hard for both of us. But, we needed to do it for the future of our children.

After eleven months, my daughters and I needed to come here to Canada, also.  I was so excited, but nervous at the same time because my second daughter was not feeling well on the day of our flight. I’m still thankful because there was a lady who helped me to take care of my eldest daughter.

I had another baby after six years, this time it was a baby boy. I can say that my husband was so excited. You know majority of the father wants a baby boy. This time, I had a lots of adjustments compared to my daughters. I woke up many times in the night because he’d always cry. I know it means that he’s hungry. He always walks around our house, tries to open all the doors and wants to go outside. If you say “I will go outside”, he’ll start to get his shoes or sandals.

I can say that having three children was the most rewarding job I’ll ever have. I will always support and love them for the rest of my life.

My Kids

Everybody has characteristics that make people unique and different. It is amazing how three individuals can grow up in the same household and have so many differences. Khrystyna, Katherine and Victor are almost complete opposites on a superficial level while their beliefs and views are very similar.

Their difference on a superficial level is obvious at the most basic level, colour and coordination. Victor is the typical eight year old boy whose favorite colour is blue or sometimes green. Katherine and Khrystyna are the typical girls whose favorite color is pink and purple. They often bring their taste in colors into their daily dress, they naturally pick out colourful outfits that are color coordinated. Victor takes his taste in colour and also puts it into his choice of clothes, however often struggles with what clothes match. Victor likes to look nice, as do his sisters, however he often needs assistance, and does ask for it, when picking out clothes in the morning.
Victor and Khrystyna love sports. On a sunny afternoon, Victor is usually found outside kicking a ball or running a bike. He typically chooses to play games that involve other people. Soccer, hockey and basketball are some of his favorite. Katherine will also be outside on a sunny day; however her typical game of choice involves her playing by herself. On occasion, she will step beyond her norm and join the game her brother and sister play, although her time involved will be short.
Another difference is in their preference of food. In comparison to Khrystyna and Katherine, Victor is a very picky eater except with any type of dessert. On the other hand, Katherine and Khrystyna will join with the dessert, but often leave it half eaten. Also, Katherine does not like ice cream.

My children have also experienced many camping trips. They like to visit new places and see beautiful views. Some of their favorite memories include camping at the lake. They enjoy walking along a trail and looking at the trees, flowers and grass. Our camping often includes a fire which we each will enjoy sitting around. Their love for the outdoors is enormous.

While my children have many differences, it is their similarities that create a close and loving family. They are each other's best friend. They are perfectly content playing with each other, at least once they agree on the game. They will look out for each other. Underneath all of those differences, they do have a great deal of love for each other and the rest of their family.

From Serbia to Canada

A long time ago, before 2001, life in Serbia was good.  People lived a normal life. They had jobs and money but after 2001 life for most people became very hard.  Lots of people lost jobs because  the stores were closed.  They didn’t open any new ones. Life was difficult.  Most people started thinking about life outside our country.

We had start talking with our friends about life in another country, like Canada.  One day my husband came home and asked me what I thought about Canada. I was confused. After a few months we decided to move to Canada for a better life for our family.  After waiting for one year, we got permission from the Canadian government to move here.  We moved to Canada on June 14, 2007.  The last day in our country was very hard, especially for our kids.  They left their friends.  They were teenagers so they found it very hard to leave their friends. It was sad for them.

The flight to Canada was about 23 hours long.  We were quiet on the flight, because we were thinking about our lives and we were nervous.
When we arrived in Canada it was difficult.  Speaking English was the biggest problem.  We could only speak a few words in English.  Every day that we were in Canada got easier and easier for us.  Now, after 10 years here, I am grateful to this country and I love it here.  We achieved our dream in this beautiful country with our children.  However, we will never forget where we came from.

Settling in Canada

-Hi! Are you in Canada?
-Hi! Yes!
-Great! I envy you! I would also go somewhere  ...

This is the dialogue every time my friends see my posts since I arrived in Canada 3 months ago.

Is there anything to envy? To be honest, I do not know ...

Our way to Canada began 5 years ago with a simple desire to change our lives for the better. Therefore, in search of a better lot, we decided to go to Canada.
But as always there are some "but"s.

We have this saying: “Do you have a dream? Go after it! Can not go? Crawl! Can not crawl? Lay in the direction of a dream!» So, we did. Lying in the direction of the dream.

So three years have passed. During this time, we had a son and dream of moving have forgotten. But one day my husband found out that his colleague was preparing to move in Canada. And he was envious.

From that moment we started to crawl slowly.

My husband began to prepare for exam in English, for this he went to a course in another city and was preparing for 3 months.

He passed the exam, got a job offer and flew to Canada for 4 months for seasonal work and for scouting.

After his return we decided to fly all together. It would seem that our dream came true, but there was no joy because it is very difficult to leave one’s home, relatives, and friends.

But it was even harder when we arrived in Canada. Another country, the language barrier, the absence of relatives. This is especially felt by a wife who has to stay at home with children. But I hope that all this shock is not in vain. And the time will come when I will laugh at how I cried because I could not speak English and wanted to go home.

So if you want to move to another country, be prepared for this challenge.  Every challenge is an opportunity!

Do you Think Computers are Making our Lives Easier?

To date, the most popular technology for home and office is a personal computer. It can be used for work and rest.  Thanks to computer systems, humanity has been able to automate most processes and made a big leap forward.  I firmly believe in our time, when every minute counts, technology significantly expands our horizons. Thus, no one can deny or raise an objection to the fact that what we want is to save our time. In addition, we can transfer or receive money within a few seconds, find the right person and talk on video communication with friends. With a PC, we may also arrange a workplace at home. In any case, having a PC is always convenient and prestigious.   Any information is available at any time. These days, the winner is not the cog, but the one who searches and analyzes new information faster.

From what we would not encounter in everyday life, everything works on the basis of a PC. Banking systems, retail chains, the sphere of education, science and technology development, medicine, industry, and any other sphere, one way or another relates to our lives, using the computer to ensure its efficiency. Here and now, we can get everything we want: buy food, get advice, book a ticket online. Consequently, we can find a job, quickly transfer documents to a partner, receive newsletters and quickly find out the latest news on the Internet. The Internet simplifies shopping because in electronic form products are cheaper. When ordering goods and services, we can look at a detail description, photos, and check reviews for this product. We can sell a car, buy a pet, find entertainment for the weekend, pick up a tour trip. Also, now video conferences are very popular. With this help, people can not only hear each other, but also see. Thus, they can solve important issues without changing their workplace and saving both their means and time.

People who do not have the possibility of real contact with other people can communicate with real compatriots and people living in other countries. The Internet provides great opportunities for education, because it can find sources of information that are not found in any library. Network allows you to quickly find the answer to your questions.

We can communicate on-line on social networks. So former classmates, old acquaintances and childhood friends who have not seen each other for many years can communicate again, view photos and give each other presents. We have dating sites where lonely hearts can find each other and live a long and happy life. In this way, our social life has been enriched because we build up connections in social networks.

Computers give us the opportunity to study online. For me personally this has been very useful at this time. I think that every emigrant knows the benefits of computers. We can communicate with our family and friends at any time. Previously, people did not have such opportunities! In my view computers make life easier for us, but they cannot replace it. I am convinced that people should use computers but should not be dependent on them.

Family Vacation

Our family just had our first trip to Cuba. Before we had children, my husband and I preferred to spend our vacation actively.  We traveled a lot around the country and went up to the mountains. Now everything has changed. We want to spend time quietly, so that it will be comfortable not only to us, but also to our sons. Cuba is a very beautiful place to relax.

While we were there we saw a beautiful beach, nature and of course nothing compared with the ocean. Most of all I was amazed by the color of the water, the blue just merges with the sky. That's very beautiful! I have not seen anything similar in Ukraine. I can compare it in beauty only with Lake Louise. We spent a lot of time on the beach and swam a lot. We picked up seashells, built sandcastles, rode on a catamaran and a boat.

We were fed food that was delicious and familiar to us I remembered Cubans as pleasant and friendly people. What could be better? With impatience I will wait for another vacation, maybe we will also decide to fly to Cuba again next year.
